WELL-DOCUMENTED LIFE - On October 1, 1861, Carlos Waldron Rowe, son of William Dayton Rowe and Sophia Kellogg, and 42 other men enlisted in Keeseville. He was born in Lewis, NY on May 3, 1835 – that made him 26 years old at the time of his enlistment. After drilling until the end of November, the regiment left for Washington with Corporal Rowe. Like many regiments, they stayed in that city until April the next year and then were sent to the Siege of Yorktown.

Carlos was promoted to orderly sergeant on June 1, 1862, then to 1st Sergeant a month later. On February 25, 1863, he was mustered in as 2nd Lieutenant after fighting through Virginia and Maryland. Their word battle in 1862 was Antietam on September 17th where they sustained 42 casualties.

The beginning of 1863 was bad for them and they had 83 casualties at Marye’s Heights. 1864 was a very bad year for the regiment with casualties in almost every one of their engagements. Most of their battles were in Virginia and they lost over 200 men. Everything went well for Carlos until he was captured in action at Spotsylvania Court House on May 10, 1864. He managed to escape and was given 4 day’s leave in Washington to aid in his recovery. He mustered out with his company, Company I, on December 13, 1864. At the end of his 3-year term. Of the 1,541 men who passed through the regiment, they had 481 killed, mortally wounded, injured, missing or captured – about 31%.

Luckily for us, his descendants kept a lot of Carlos’ belongings after he died in 1927. Much of his memorabilia can be seen at the New York State Military Museum site at: https://dmna.ny.gov/.../Rowe/77thInfRoweCollection.htm At CCHA, we have Carlos’ wooden campaign trunk.

His obituary was in the Plattsburgh Sentinel on April 5, 1927 “KEESEVILLE – Carlos Rowe, an old Civil War veteran, answered the last roll call Thursday morning, March 31, after a long illness.

Mr. Rowe was born in the town of Lewis May 3, 1830. Funeral services were held from the Baptist Church on Saturday afternoon. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery.” If you go to Evergreen to see his grave, you’ll be disappointed. His grave is at the Port Douglas Cemetery where he is buried with his wife, Lydia A. Andrews, and his daughter, Josephine.
