Biography

Alfred Rouget was born in 1864 in Yering, Victoria, Australia, the son of Susan Rouget and John Rouget.[1]

He married Eliza Kate Milne Mitchell at Wandin Yallock, VIC on 01 Sep 1887.[2] There were 12 children. He was an orchardist at Wandin, Victoria where, among other things, he grew raspberries[3] and cherries.[4]

In 1904 he was acquitted of a charge of stealing a steer. The steer had been on his property for several months, he did not know who it belonged to and it was causing a nuisance when he sold it. [5]

On 24 Apr 1917 Alfred applied to become an Australian War Worker, to work as a labourer or navvy in War industries in the UK, under a joint Australian government/British government scheme. At the time he was living in Wandin, VIC. He was married with 5 children and was a farmer. He stated he was born at Evelyn, near Lilydale, VIC. He took steps to lease his farm once he received word he would be accepted.[6]

He was accepted and his agreement was signed on 10 Jan 1918. He was issued with Australian War Worker Badge No.1348 and embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on the SS "Borda" on 05 Jan 1918, disembarking in Plymouth, England on 04 Mar 1918.

Alfred commenced work as a labourer with Moss & sons (location not stated) on 11 Mar 1918, but within 2 months was incapacitated. After some difficulties getting him to a doctor he was diagnosed with valvular disease of the heart and bronchitis. He was admitted to St. George's Hospital in London on 23 May 1918 for treatment and was discharged on 18 Jun 1918. The AIF Medical Officer decided he was unfit to remain and should be repatriated.

He was repatriated to Australia on the SS "Homeward", departing Plymouth on 31 Jul 1918. He disembarked in Australia on 02 Oct 1918 and his agreement was terminated as complete on the same day.

He died at his daughter's residence in Balaclava, VIC in 1931.[7]
