It's time for a 1776 Project check-in! Please respond within the next two weeks to let me know if you want to continue as a member of the project. We'd like to know:
If you are on the right team or if you'd like to make a change. It's a requirement that every 1776 Project member is a part of one of the project's teams, so if you're not assigned to a team, let us know which team you'd like to join.
What you think the project is doing well, and what changes you'd like to see us make?
Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within two weeks, we will assume you are no longer interested in participating in the 1776 Project, and your badge will be removed. If you wish to reapply for membership later, we will be happy to have you back.
Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!
Cheryl - I'm related to the Hand ancestry at GD 10 according to Y111 FTDNA testing and I believe that Robert Turner was my 5th Grandfather. It was postulated by Turner Wiley that Robert Turner was a British Army officer that deserted and changed his name prior to marrying MaryAnn Thornborough. Therefore I'm not convinced that father/mother were named Turner. I'm looking for that Hand connection, if it exists. How do I accept this relationship without the Turner father/mother connection?
Robert Turner was a Loyalist, a Captain of a Randolph County, North Carolina, Company in the Loyal Militia. He was captured after the Battle. He was a prisoner at Halifax, North Carolina, on April 5, 1776. He was eventually transferred to Maryland. He broke out of jail in September 1776 and escaped. It is unknown whether he was recaptured and died in prison or died while a fugitive. There is no indication he ever returned home. In November 1777 the North Carolina General Assembly confiscated his property and in 1779 he was listed among those who had committed treason against the state. I haven't seen any evidence he deserted and changed his name. There are those who wish to cover the fact that he was a Loyalist.
Further, he married Mary Thornburg before 1765 -- well before he served in the Loyalist Militia so the story of deserting and changing his name lacks logic.
Cheryl - Thanks for your reply, it is much appreciated. I too have wondered about the logic that if Turner/Hand was a British officer that deserted after the French Indian War (or Seven Year's War), before he married Thornborough, how he came to continue to fight for the Loyalist during the American Revolution. We probably will only have speculation unless some additional documents are uncovered. There is additional Turner/Hand campaign information located at http://jliptrap.us/gen/hand.htm. Since I and another male Turner descendent have YDNA tested as having Hand ancestors, it's possible that this version is plausible. I acknowledge that there are other DNA related issues that might cause this to be true, that the Turner name change to Hand surname happened before Robert Turner or that there is an illegitimate male child in the line. Vallentine does make a compelling argument, but is based on no other contrary information available at the time in 1995, like the DNA evidence.
Since I'm new to WikiTree, how do I accept this father/mother connection (even though I have my doubts or until I can submit documentation otherwise) to further the research on this Turner line?
I'm not sure I understand "accept this...connection." You can connect to them and if you find out later that it is incorrect you can delete the connection. Is that what you mean?
John Vallentine's research is old but I haven't seen anything (on this line) that indicates he was wrong. I know there are those who just ignore the Loyalist issue and say Robert Turner moved to Tennessee after the war with the rest of the family.
I am checking in on behalf of the 1776 Project to announce the new project membership requirements and to verify that you are still interested in being a member of the project. All project members are being asked to join one of the project teams and also to make at least one project contribution every 6 months. We are also asking all project members to join the project's Google Group for project communications.
If you are interested in remaining with the Project, please reply to this comment or send me a message, request to join the Google Group, and let us know what team you would like to participate on.
We really appreciate your contributions on WikiTree, and thank you for all your hard work. If you have any questions, please ask. We would also love to hear any feedback you may have for the project.
If we don't hear back from you we will assume that you no longer wish to participate in the project and if so, you could rejoin at any time as is convenient for you.
I noticed that you were currently following the CEMETERIES tag, but were not yet a member of the Cemeteries Global Cemeteries Project. If you are interested in more details about the project, or are just ready to sign up, please head on over to our G2G Welcome Post for more information.
You wrote: "Why did you enter the whole family with a misspelling and then immediately request merges? Why not just request to be added to the trusted list? "
If I had spelled the name correctly I would have simply added him as father to the child I had entered because he would have auto suggested. Some misspellings are similar enough to trigger the needed suggestion.
When adding people I work up all sides of the family tree. In this case I was surprised that I was adding that early of ancestors without encountering already entered persons. But, alas, my error was large, and it was probably when adding a female spouse that I encountered the duplication of multiple generations of family.
Most of the family has been merged and the duplications are absorbed.
It has been a couple of weeks since we contacted you about your participation in the Southern Colonies Project. As we haven't heard from you, we are following up to make sure you wish to remain a member.
We understand that interests shift as we grow our shared tree and that some members may have moved on to projects more pertinent to their ancestors. If this is the case for you, please let us know.
If we do not hear back from you within the week, we will assume you have moved on to other things for the moment and remove you from the project. Please know that you will always be welcome to rejoin should your interests shift back in this direction.
Thank you so much for your participation; we genuinely appreciate it.
On behalf of the US Southern Colonies Project Leaders, I am doing a check-in with members to see if you were Active in US Southern Colonies in the last two months?
We have not heard back from you about the Global Cemeteries Project so assume you do not wish to continue in the project at this time. Thank you for all the contributions you have made; we are sorry to see you go. You are most welcome to rejoin at any time via the G2G sign up post.
I think the problem with Dillard Dukes is that there is a Senior and Junior, which explains why Dillard was married at 9. Dillard Sr. married a Maria, not his mither, Mary.
I have notified Wikitree of this problem. I told them they can remove Vandeventer -47 linked from Vandeventer-25 because it leads back to the same person.
Actually I think your info is the correct one because the Dillard Dukes profile says he was married at age 9, and it's an orphan from an upload. It's fine, maybe there is two Mary Haddox/John Doak/Dukes I have had stranger situations come up!

It appears there are two Vandeventer-47s in the Wikitree database.
