Communication Preferences: I am interested in communicating private message with cousins and anyone else with an interest in genealogy. My family tree is private but I want to collaborate on deep ancestors or historical figures.
My first known Ross ancestor was John Ross, who arrived in Hants county, Nova Scotia about 1770 and was granted 600 acres on the Windsor - Halifax road as a discharged British soldier. My mother's Bishop ancestors arrived in Kings county, Nova Scotia from Connecticut in 1760, as New England Planters, to settle on lands formerly occupied by Acadians.

Biography

I was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. My father was a steelworker and our family lived in a working and middle class section of the city, at the top of the Terrace Street hill. My elementary school years were at Ashby School, with grade 9 at Woodill Junior High, my grade 10 and 11 years were at the "old" Academy, and I was in the graduating class of the "new" Sydney Academy in 1960.

I attended Acadia University in Wolfville, NS for my undergraduate years, graduating in 1963 with a BA in history. I was accepted into the Law School at Dalhousie University, but delayed attendance while I taught grade 10 English for the 1963/64 year at Sydney Academy. The following year, I had a very successful first year at Dal Law but realized I preferred a career in teaching. I graduated with my BEd degree from Acadia in 1966, and completed my MEd from Acadia in 1974. Between 1976 - 1978, I completed all course work for a DEd at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (Univ. of Toronto), but I never completed my dissertation.

I met my wife, Sandra Lee Ripley, during my first year of teaching at Sydney Academy. She also was born in Sydney, and we grew up living five blocks from each other. She was a graduating student, but I never taught her. We began dating while I was a law student at Dal and she was an undergrad at University of Kings College, adjacent to the Dal campus. She switched to Acadia when I did, and completed her BA in English while I earned my BEd and then taught grade six at Port Williams Elementary, in Kings County.

We returned to Sydney in 1967, where I again taught at Sydney Academy. We returned to Wolfville in 1968, when I was offered a fellowship in the new MEd program at Acadia. Sandra completed her BEd the same year.

In 1969, following my year at Acadia, I became principal of New Minas Elementary School, in Kings County. In 1972, I transferred to become principal of Central Kings Rural High School. After my doctoral study in Toronto, I spent 18 months of temporary supervisory roles in the Kings County central office, followed by the 1979/80 school year as principal of Horton District High School.

In 1980, I moved permanently into the Kings system central office, serving first as Central sub-system supervisor, then as Eastern sub-system supervisor, and I retired in 1995 as assistant superintendent of the Kings school system.

After retirement, I started my own small business doing contract work for the Annapolis Valley Regional school system, local small businesses, and Acadia University's School of Education.

Over the years, Sandra and I raised five wonderful children - Lysia, Ian, Karen, David, and John.

Hi, Greg

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.
