Biography
Charity (Roskilly) Hocking was born in Cornwall, England.
Charity was born in 1792. Charity Roskilly was baptised on 4 July 1792 at Marazion, Cornwall, England. Her parents were Suzanne and Thomas Roskilly, [1] or possibly at St Hilary, Cornwall, England which is only 2.5 miles apart. [2]
Charity Roskilly married Samuel Hocking on 23 May 1814 at St Hilary, Cornwall. Their residence was given as Marazion, Cornwall.[3] They were both literate as they both signed the register.
The 1841 census lists Samuel (53-57) and Charity (49-53) as living at Fore Street, St Hilary, Cornwall with their children Thomas (22-26), Susan (20-24), John (14), Elizabeth (12), William (8), and Marey (30-34) and Gabriel Thomas (52-56) (father and daughter, probably lodgers or employees)[4]
The 1851 census lists Charity as the 58 year old wife of Samuel Hocking (62) living in High Street, Marazion, Cornwall with their 30 year old daughter Susan[5]
The 1861 census record for Samuel Hocking lists him as married to Grace living in Pentire, Wendron, Cornwall. He is 74 and his details fit with this profile. He is a labourer. There is no other record for a Samuel Hocking that fits his age and place. I think the name of his wife has been incorrectly transcribed as Grace instead of Charity as they are living together in the 1871 census. There is no 1861 census record for a Charity Hocking.[6].
Charity is listed in the 1871 census as the 78 year old wife of Samuel Hocking living in Marazion, Cornwall with her husband, son John and his wife Maria and their children Susan (15) and Samuel (10) plus a visitor Samuel Matters [7]
Charity Hocking died in December 1871 and was buried on 26 December 1871 at Marazion, Cornwall [8]
