Biography

Katherine Rose was born Catherine Milligan Rose in late 1901 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. She was the younger daughter of Robert and Isabel (Smith) Rose. ^[1]

Isabella Rose and three Rose children migrated to the United States of America in 1907. They left Glasgow, Scotland on 27th July 1907 aboard the Caledonia, and arrived at Ellis Island in New York on 4th August 1907. Isabella was 35 and was accompanied by children Jean, 7; Catherine, 5; and Robert, 3. The arrival record identifies Isabella's father as John Smith, 16 Upper Grove Place, Edinburgh. The family stated its destination in the United States as New York, New York. ^[2] The family of Robert and Isabella Rose appears on the 1910 and 1920 US censuses, living in New York. These records indicate that Catherine M Rose was eight years old in April 1910 and was 18 years old as of 1st January 1920. ^[3][4]

Katherine Rose, aged 28 years, had been in Scotland and returned by ship to the US in 1930. ^[5]

Katherine married pioneer aviator, Bert Hinkler (who used the assumed name of Herbert Bonney to avoid publicity), on 21st May 1932 in Stamford, Connecticut, United States of America. ^[6]

She was widowed in January 1933 when Bert crashed in the Prato Magno Alps, Italy. Katherine Hinkler was living with her parents and other family members in Queens, New York City, New York, in 1940. ^[7]

Katherine passed away, aged 75 years, on 31st October 1976. ^[8] Administration of the will of Katherine Hinkler of 2135 37th Street, Astoria, Queens County, New York, who died 31st October 1976, was recorded in London, England, on 13th June 1988. ^[9]
