James William Rollins Sr was born on February 10, 1898 in South Pittsburgh, Marion County, Tennessee.^[1] His father was Jefferson Davis Rollins, and his mother Alice May Doss.^[2]

In 1910, he lived in Civil District 4, Marion County, Tennessee. At age 12, he worked as a farm laborer on the family farm.^[3]
