Death

Joseph, late of Great George Street, Bristol died on 7 December 1940. [14] [15]

His obituary printed in the Taunton Courier, and Western Advertiser on Saturday 21 December 1940 gives some rich family information: WESTON-SUPER-MARE THE LATE MR. JOSEPH ROGERS: The death occurred at Parkstone, at the age of 87 of Mr Joseph Rogers, younger son of the Rev Thomas Oliver Rogers, late of Weston-super-Mare and Bristol. Mr Rogers was very fond of Weston and the county of Somerset, which had been the home of the family for some hundreds of years.

His grandmother, Elizabeth (Vassall) Oliver (1739-1779), inoculated the people of Uphill against smallpox, at great danger to herself, towards the end of the eighteenth or the beginning of the nineteenth century. His grandfather, Colonel Joseph Rogers JP (1763-1819), raised a battalion of Somerset Yeomanry for the Prince Regent, and lost his life trying to save two Cleveland boys from the sea between Burnbeck Isle and the mainland at Weston. His father, the Reverend Thomas Oliver Rogers MA (1796-1879) was connected with the parish church at Weston, and is buried at Uphill; He was on the coach from Plymouth, which brought the news of the Battle of Waterloo to Bristol.

Mr Joseph Rogers founded the Weston-Super-Mare Club and was its trustee and honorary secretary. He was connected with the school board and many other activities, including the golf club. He was secretary of the Banwell and Weston Horse Show for a long while and was Master of the Weston Harriers (Pony Club branch) for two seasons.

His only son, Ronald Joseph Rogers (1883-1915), was killed in the last war and his grandson. Geoffrey Ronald Rogers is at present fighting in Africa. He leaves two daughters. [16]
