Gordon Francis Rodway MM was born on 17th August 1917 in Temora, New South Wales, Australia. He was the son of William L Rodway and Annie E unknown. [1]
On 2nd January 1940 Gordon enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force and was posted to the 2/1st Australian Infantry Battalion, with whom he fought in Libya in January 1941 and Greece-Crete in April-May 1941. [2] He was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for 'skilful leadership under fire'. He was presented his medal at Government House Sydney by the Governor of New South Wales on 15th March 1950. [3][4]He became a prisoner-of-war at Retime, Crete on 30th May 1941 and was held in Stalag 357. [5] After repatriation to Australia following war's end, he made his home at Barmedman Road, Temora.
