Hi Carol,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Hi Carol

Thank you for adding your DNA Test information to your profile on WikiTree. Your information will be propagated to the profiles of your parents and your ancestors within about 24 hours of being added. It will also propagate to the profiles of the descendants of your ancestors, so they may see your information under the heading "DNA Connections" just as you can see theirs.

Getting started with DNA outlines how to proceed to use your DNA test information on WikiTree and DNA is a link to a collection of links about WikiTree's many features involving DNA.

The DNA Connections list on your profile will provide a visual way for you to find potential relatives on WikiTree who have also added their DNA test information. Using DNA tools at sites like GEDMatch.com, if you find a relative that matches your DNA sufficiently and you have genealogical sources for the intermediate relationships, you can mark the specific parental relationships back to the most recent ancestor that you both share as "confirmed with DNA." For details, guidance, and examples of how to properly document DNA confirmations, see DNA confirmation.

To find other potential relatives, continue adding sourced profiles for other lines until you can connect on all branches. The more branches you are able to add the greater the likelihood of finding potential cousins to match with. The process of identifying which branch elements of DNA relate to will better enable you to find matches that relate to the particular branches you are researching.

Have fun!

Hi, Azure,

I am the administrator of my mother’s DNA test on Ancestry.com. I have also uploaded it to Gedmatch. Can I add her test results to WikiTree? My mother is 92 and does not have an email address or a computer, so cannot add it herself.

Thanks,

Carol Allen

Hi Carol,

Thanks for asking! Unfortunately, due to privacy laws, she would need to have her own WikiTree account. Please see the following regarding this commonly asked question:

Hope this helps, please let me know if you need further assistance.

Hey Carol,

A tip on sources. I have taken a quick look at Rodebaugh-41.

There you mention two websites as sources, but without the ID of documents or the ID of the FindAGrave index. The documents themselves are the source, the websites just a medium to access them. A complete source will make it clear to look at what page in which index at which scan to see the names. FindAGrave has very mixed types of information and not all are correct. Filled in small trees there are not considered primary sources.

Do you have the links to the pages on Ancestry and the number of the FindAGrave page? You can read up more on how to use sources here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources. For an explanation why 'Ancestry' on itself is no sources see the G2G posts here.

If you need help finding sources, please let us know or post your question on the G2G forum (genealogy help section).

Thanks. I will work on correcting my citations.
Michel,

I have started to update my citations for Christopher E Allen (1835-1891). So far, I Have updated the citations for the 1850, 1860, 1870 censuses. I sourced them from FamilySearch instead of Ancestry so everyone can get to them. I am getting a message that I have not entered any sources. Can you take a look and tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks,

Carol

Hey,

Yes, Allen-46113 has a tag on top. It looks like { { Unsourced } } (without the spaces). That is a code to generate the message. You can delete it from profiles that have at least one primary source (or add it to the ones that lack sources).

This tag also makes the profile show up in your menu. When you go to >Find > Unsourced Profiles you can see a list there. This profile should be on that list. A very handy feature, I use it often.

Another thing. If you like adding sources, you can have a look at the sourcerers team page. There are little competitions with points, and you can get a badge. That is if you like that sort of thing. See eg https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Sourcerers and the upcoming event (first weekend of October).

But for now it is safe to delete the tag and not worry about all these groups ;)

Thanks for all your work, it is great to see you work so hard.

Hi, Michel,

I added Keys-1818 a day or 2 ago. I added a source — the PA Death Certificate listed below. I did not add the first source that says “maintained by Cate.” Do you know what this is and how it was added? I tried to look at all the edits, but I do not see this.

Sources for Keys-1818: 1)Hill, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, USA ; Maintained by Cate (contributor 47742927) . 2)”PA Death Certificate” for Mary G Dewees (Mary’s daughter) , Whitemarsh Township, Plymouth Township, File #1084, Registered #13. Lists parents as John Keys and Mary Redline. Online at Ancestry.com [1]

Thanks,

Carol Allen

Hey Carol,

Thank you for upgrading, 😊

I am very pleased to welcome you to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together. I see you have your tree on another website. At Wikitree we only have one tree as we say, and I hope you will have fun adding your twigs to the tree by creating sourced profile pages.

It is best to start with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

I see Karen already answered your question on GedComs. One of our mentors created a tutorial for the GEDCOMpare process that I found very helpful. I hope that you will too.

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

Happy tree climbing.

Hi, Michel,

I have started to create my tree. I have added my husband, since I am investigating his ancestors as well as my own. My husband has taken an autosomal and a Y-DNA test. How do I enter this information for my husband?

Thanks,

Carol

Carol,

Due to the very strict (and good) privacy settings you cannot enter DNA results for other living people. So your husband will have to become a member himself.

You can enter his e-mail address in the data field near the bottom of his profile. That will send him an invitation.

Getting started with DNA outlines how to proceed to use your DNA test information on WikiTree and DNA is a link to a collection of links about WikiTree's many features involving DNA.

Michel,

I entered his email address and was taken to a screen to enter information about him since he is not a member. When I enter his information, however, it show me that he already exists in WikiTree (because I had already entered him into the tree). What should I do now?

Did you enter his email in his profile, so the one you had already created?

What I know is written here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Invitations

If you did, I can ask other that have more experience with the process itself.

Hi, Karen,

Can I create a tree on WikiTree or do I have to upload a Gedcom?

Thanks for your help!

Carol

Also, many times it is better to add records individually rather than by a GEDCOM. There is a lot of cleanup involved on profiles that came from GEDCOM's. Either way how you do it, it is worth it to have the profiles on Wikitree.
