One of the larger Acadian families[1] stems from Étienne Robichaud who was born around 1640.[2] His parents are unknown, although Louis Robichaud is often incorrectly listed as his father. See Discussion.

Around 1663, he married Françoise Boudrot, daughter of Michel Boudrot and Michelle Aucoin[2] in Acadia.[3] One descendant claims that Étienne came from France with his wife. White thinks this is unlikely as Françoise Boudrot's parents were established in Acadia before her birth..[3]

Between about 1664 and 1677, the couple had six children: [2]

  1. Madeleine (dit Cadet)
  2. Charles (dit Cadet)
  3. Prudent
  4. Marie
  5. Alexandre
  6. François (dit Niganne)

The family was listed in the 1671 census at Port Royal (Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada). Étienne refused to give any information to the census taker.[4][5] In 1678, an acre of their land was cultivated and they had 19 cattle. [6] The location of their farm is uncertain, but in 1707, his son Alexandre's farm was on the north bank of the Dauphin (Annapolis) River east of Goat Island.[7]

Étienne died in Port Royal before the 1686 Acadian census.[2]

Reseaarch Notes

Origins. According to Massignon[1], Étienne may have originated from La Chaussée, Poitou (today Vienne), France. She posits three arguments in favour of this theory: 1) the spelling of 'Robichau' was unique to the d'Aulnay estates in France; 2) a certain Estienne Robichau appeared in the parish register at La Chaussée; and 3) the deposition of his descendant stated that Etienne brought his wife from France, indicating a bond between the Robichaud and Boudrot before arriving in Acadia. The Boudrot family had already been allied with other Acadian families (Girouard and Aucoin) in France. Stephen White believes that Étienne's marriage took place in Acadia because Françoise Boudrot's parents were established in Acadia before her birth.[3]
An article by Denis Savard in l'Acadie Nouvelle explains that later records from La Chaussée show that the Étienne found there did not travel to Acadia. [10]
Father of Étienne Robichaud. In 1994, Stephen White stated:
According to Placide Gaudet, he would have been the father of Étienne Robichaud who was in Port-Royal, Acadia in the 1671 Census."
Since then, White has corrected this; there apparently is no connection between Étienne and the supposed "Louis Robichau". He was not a Robichaud but Louis Rebicher.[12]

Removed Unknown (Robichaud) Unknown (abt.1620-) as father because the parents are unknown and he does not need a placeholder father that has even a modicum of misleading information.

CENSUS: 1671, Port Royal, Acadia, name spelled Estienne ROBICHAUT. In a curious entry, he made known to the Franciscan census-taker Laurent MOLIN that he "did not want to see him. He left the house and told his wife to tell me that he did not at all wish to give the count of his animals and lands." [Did he fear a tax, or was he just a difficult man? Was he a Protestant? Two other individual were also not forthcoming.] Etienne was listed as Laborer (Farmer). He did have a wife, and there should have been three young children.

I agree with you Jacqueline, please merge Robichaud-790 and 81. on another note I have a Louis Robichaud as his father in my family tree documents. This information was gathered from the St Boniface Historical society records. It also shows his mother's name was Marie with no last name

I am removing the link to Louis Robichaud pending further evidence. His parents will be unknown and unknown and project protected.

Is there any evidence for the parents of Etienne Robichaud? See discussion section which corrects Tanguay's claim that Louis was his father.
