On 7th June 1839, Jonathan arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia, on the Sir Charles Forbes, having sailed from Liverpool, England, with his wife, Ann (nee Harvey), and their son, Thomas, as well as his brother, Thomas Roberts, and his family: wife, Hannah (nee Webb); and their daughters Elizabeth Ann and Hannah; and sons, William, John and James.

Jonathan died on 2 September 1879, aged 68 years, in Gawler, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.

His death was reported in the Evening Journal (Adelaide, SA : 1869 - 1912), 1879, September 8, p. 2 (SECOND EDITION)[5]
ROBERTS.— On the 2nd September, Jonathan Roberts, of Gawler River, accidentally killed at Gawler Railway Crossing by the capsizing of his trap, aged 68 years. A colonist of 40 years. Much respected by all who knew him.
He was buried at Angle Vale Carclew Primitive Methodist Cemetery, Penfield Gardens, Adelaide, South Australia.
