The 1911 England and Wales Census shows William living with his parents and four siblings in Hollington, Sussex, England.[2] He was 11 years old.
William was killed in action on 29 October 1918 in Flanders, Belgium serving as a Private in the 10th Battalion of the Essex Regiment. His Regimental Number was 44842.[3] He was 18 years old.
William was buried in the Cross Roads Cemetery in Fontaine-au-Bois, Departement du Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.[3]
