Side: CSA
Regiment(s): Georgia 44th Infantry Regiment-Johnson Guards-Physician
Georgia

David Richard Richardson was born in Watkinsville, Clarke, Georgia to parents Richard Richardson, tavern & hotel keeper and Letitia James Johnston. WAR BETWEEN THE STATES (Civil War)

In 1864 census David is shown as helping to reorganize the militia.[1] Like all of his brothers the Georgia, Civil War Muster Rolls, 1860-1864 shows David listed in the 24th Georgia militia. On 7 May 1862 David has re-inlisted in the 44th Infantry Regimant of Georgia (Confederacy) in Clarke, Georgia, USA. He served as a Private in Company C, 44th Infantry Regiment Georgia. David was trained as Physician. He was wounded, then discharged (mustered out 1 Aug, 1862). The "1864 Census for Re-Organizing the Georgia Militia" reflects David was exempted from further draft: due to being wounded with a disability discharge from Company C, and due to being a physician.

NOTE: The 44th regiment was formed from Henry, Jasper, Clarke, Clayton, Spalding, Putnam, Fayette, Pike, Morgan, and Greene counties. It surrendered at Appomattox with 4 officers and 73 men, thus was combined with 3rd Arkansas, the 1st North Carolina and the 3rd North Carolina to form a brigade under Brig. Gen. John Walker. After battle of Seven Pines, the 48th of Georgia replaced the 3rd Arkansas and Brig. Gen. Roswell Ripley succeeded Walker. After the Battle of Sharpsburg, the 44th was placed under the command of Colonel George Doles of the 4th Georgia. Only 52 men of the original 1,115 remained at Appomattox. As Captain John Harris remembered years later, "The impartial historian, when he collects up the facts and figures, will show that the 44th Georgia Regiment suffered a greater casualty in killed and wounded, in proportion to number carried into action, than any other regiment on the Southern side."

Following the war, David married, and continued his profession as physician. The 1870 U.S. Federal Census reflects David in Watkinsville, Clarke, Georgia with profession of Physician, married with 3 children.[2]

David Richard Richardson passed away October 30, 1918 in Iuka, Tishomingo County, Mississippi, USA.[3]
