Enlisted: Dec. 1, 1861
Mustered out: Feb 6, 1866
Side: USA
Regiment(s): Company B 96th New York Infantry

Amos was born in 1837. He was the son of Asa Richardson and Susan Piper. He passed away in 1922.

The following story comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Record 1861-1865 Facebook Page:

GOT A LIEUTENANT’S PENSION - Amos S. Richardson’s ancient ancestors came from Wales. By the early 1600s some had come to Massachusetts by way of England. After the Revolution, his branch of the family continued to move westward until his parents ended up in West Chazy.

Amos enlisted in the 96th Infantry in December 1861, after he was recruited by Lieutenant Stephen Moffitt to be the second corporal for Captain Darius Parsons’ Company B. He left his wife, Emily Pickett, at home with their new-born daughter and went to Plattsburgh to drill for three months.

The regiment left Plattsburgh on March 11, 1862; to serve in the Army of the Potomac. Between April and October 1862, the regiment lost over 140 men to casualty before being ordered to the Department of North Carolina. They stayed on the coast and along the rivers in that state trying to prevent blockade runners from getting supplies to Confederate troops.

At the end of 1863, the 96th was transferred to the Army of the James to go to the battlefields around Richmond and Petersburg. By the time they got to their first battle on May 5, 1864, Amos had re-enlisted for a county bounty of $200 and been promoted to sergeant. Before the end of the war, the regiment received over 300 casualties. Fortunately, he escaped any injury and was promoted again to 2nd lieutenant. They stayed near Petersburg until February 6, 1866, from City Point, VA, and sailed down the James River for home.

Almost as soon as Amos returned to Clinton County, the family moved to Michigan where their first child was born in December. Eventually, they moved to Charlevoix County on the northeastern shore of Lake Michigan where he farmed until he died in 1922. So far, we have found three other men who enlisted in Clinton County who moved to the same county – Henry Blow of the 15th Cavalry, Melvin Monty of the 16th Infantry and a cousin (see note below), William Richardson of the 118th Infantry.
