Mary Louisa Richardson was a Quaker. She was born in Lisburn, county Antrim, on the 22 April 1815 to Quaker Parents John Richardson and Henrietta Greer.
[1]
On 27 June 1839, she married John Shaw Smith, her first cousin (son of her aunt Mary Richardson (1784-) and her aunt's husband John Smith (1771-1822)), at Derriaghy, Lisburn, County Antrim, in a Church of Ireland ceremony.[2]
"Marriage. On 27 Jun 1839, at Derriaghy, Lisburn, by Rev Thomas Thomson, John Shaw Smith, Esq, Cumberland Terr, Regent's Park, & Mary Louisa, eldest daughter of John Richardson, Esq, Lisburn".[3]
Such a marriage was contrary to Quaker rules. Her case was discussed several times at the Lisburn monthly meeting in 1839
[4] and she was disowned by meeting held on 15 August that year.
[5]
The couple had two children, John Augustus Smith and Mary Henrietta Florence Smith (both mentioned as executors of her husband's will.
[6])
Mary Louisa widow of John Shaw Smith died in Ealing on 31 May 1892.
