Hi Claire,

Thanks for taking responsibility for the Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.

Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up GEDCOM biographies, and interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!

Debi

PS If you have any GEDCOM cleanup to do, there is a new tool that can help. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

Hi Debi, Thank you so much for the praises. I'm afraid I'm not really worthy. These orphans came up as matches when I was reviewing my gedcompare file. They are my family and I was amazed to actually find them. Not too many matches from the 2400 individual entries in the file. I am so pleased that you mentioned the cleanup tool before I added all of my extended family. I was trying to follow the format that transferred when adding new sources that I came up with since uploading my gedcom file in November. This makes so much more sense. I will continue plugging along but I think its going to take me forever to get through my list. I mistakenly signed up for WikiTree using my married name. Then I entered me as my father's daughter using my maiden name, of course. I now have two profiles, which I cannot merge until my gedcompare file is empty or I'm willing to lose it. So much for reading directions before diving in. Hoping to do better.

Thanks again, Claire

Thanks for your note, Claire,

If you hadn't already put all the work to get your Add buttons in the GEDCOMpare, I'd have recommended scrapping it and doing the Last Name at Birth (LNAB) change first. Actually, if you don't mind working it a little differently, I would still recommend that. Here's why ...every change you make is recorded in your Contributions list by your WIki ID (currently Piltz-34). When you change it to your maiden name, the Contributions list will start over from that point.

There's a way to use your GEDCOM file without having to do it all over again. I can't show you exactly how it will work but can explain. Here's what I share with members still slogging through the match/reject process:

If you would like to work in family units, try this.

  • Click compare on one that you have matched
  • Check to see if there are suggestions for any of the connected records
  • If so, click the compare button there to look at that one
  • Reject or accept that suggestion
  • When you do, it will close the compare page
  • Now click Compare for the original one you looked at
  • Repeat the process for any other suggestions
  • Once you have processed all the suggestions for that family, the Add button will appear for any that did not have matches
  • Click the Add button for the first one you want to create
  • A new profile page will open, filled with the data from your file
  • Adjust any of the data fields and the information in the edit box to suit you
  • Scroll to the bottom and click Add ... button at the bottom.
  • The new profile will be saved, already connected to the profile from which you started.
  • Close that tab.
  • Repeat the process for each family member.

Please do let me know if you have any questions about how WikiTree works, even if they seem minor. My rule of thumb when I started was to search for an answer for five minutes, then reach out to my Greeters, and then resume searching. I might have found the answer before they got back to me but they sometimes offered a different way of doing the same thing which was easier. We are always here to help.

See you in the branches,

Debi

Hello Debi,

OK, here goes. I started this process in November. I refreshed my GEDCOMpare file 3 times before I had a clean slate to add. I started with 1,041 suggestions and have no idea how many were added with the refreshes. I truly appreciate your advice but not looking forward to this process. I guess I will delete the GEDCOM file, merge my profiles, and then upload the file again. Does this mean that the people I added, matched and edited will still be in WikiTree and I will not have to add them but matches will be found during the compare process?

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me through this.

Right, they will all still be there and come up in the matches. Then you can use the process I talked about from those to create the next generations.

Can I tell you that I love you? You're the greatest!

Looks like the merge went well and the GEDCOM upload and processing is moving along. I'm really glad. Please let me know if anything else comes up.

Debi, I have made it to "no more suggested matches' in my GEDCOMpare file. Thanks for your very helpful suggestions. I still have lots of adds to process but I took a break from that to load my DNA file to Gedmatch. I also want to clean up my bios and sources before continuing. No luck breaking down any brick walls so far but still hoping there's someone out there with roots to my O'Neill's and Ryan"s. Thanks again. I couldn't have done it without your help.

Hi Cheryl, thanks for the welcome. I am currently in the process of GEDCOMParing my uploaded ged.com ancestry family tree. This is an extremely time-consuming process. I am very anxious to complete it and add my family to wiki tree. I responded to a previous welcome but I’ve not received an answer to my question about uploading my DNA file. Ancestry only provides the DNA in a .txt format and wiki tree only accepts a Ged.com format Any suggestions?

Hi Claire

Thank you for upgrading. I am pleased to welcome you as a member of the WikiTree family. Your contributions will go a long way to joining the world’s trees together.

I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Please add as much information as you can, with sources, as it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

Have fun collaborating on your ancestors

Hi Wendy, Thanks for the welcome. I have uploaded my tree and am in the process of gedcomparing. Unfortunately, I was not able to upload my DNA. It’s an Ancestry .txt file, not ged.com. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Claire

I see that you have uploaded a GEDCOM. The GEDCOM will not automatically populate your tree, it generates a GEDCOMpare report. The GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.
