Biography

Scottish flag
James Reid was born in Scotland.

James Reid was born on about 12 March 1870. He was the son of Martha Winter. His father was probably Wilhelm "William" Reid.

In the Scotland Census of 1871 James Winter (aged 1) was probably recorded at No. 7 Back Gate, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland in the household of his grandfather Alexander (47) and grandmother Helen (44). Also in the household was his mother Martha Winter (18 and a Seaman's daughter) and her three younger siblings Helen (9), Alexander (6) and Joseph (3), as well as one servant.

In the Scotland Census of 1881, James W Reid (aged 11 and a scholar) was living with his father William Reid (aged 32 and a Seaman), his mother Martha Reid (28) and his five siblings Helen Reid (9), William Reid (7), Alexander Reid (4), Charles Reid (1) and Albert Reid (1) at No. 1 Harbour Street, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.

James was 18 years of age when he and his family emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand, departing from London on 22 September 1889 and arriving into Wellington on 6 November 1889 on board the Ship Kaikoura[1]. From there the family made their way to Auckland. His occupation was listed as Labourer.

Once they settled in Auckland, his parents set up a fish shop. James had his own fishing boat he named "The Dolphin".

At the age of 23 he married Matilda Kenny on 21 January 1893 at the home of her parents in Auckland. They went on to have at least four children.

James and his wife would often go out on fishing trips together, sometimes for weeks at a time. Sadly Matilda drowned on 24 January 1904 when the dinghy she was in sank.

He died on 11 July 1911 when the dinghy he was in capsized.
