This book was written by the Wapwallopen Historical Society, a lot of the information comes from first hand knowledge and family bibles.

  • From the Readler family history in the book,History of the Wapwallopen Region,

The earliest records in Luzerne County Court House indicate that a Philip Radler purchased a farm of 163 acres and 130 perches from John Nicholas Strohl, land which Strohl purchased from Robert Tay lor as recorded in Deed Book Volume 10 page 173. This tract of land was originally part of a Daniel Cahill Warrant under application 330 dated April 3, 1769 and was warranted under the name of "Mall Wallops." It was patented to Robert Taylor on April 3, 1775. The deed from John Nicholas Strohl was dated July 7, 1807. This 163 acre tract was the northernmost part of the tract and was bounded by lands of Ceorge Car penter and Michael Weiss. On November 24, 1823 in Deed Book Volume 24 page 23, Philip Roedler purchased from Jacob and Jeremiah Hess a tract of land containing 25 acres and 6 perches, bounded by lands of William Hess and Michael Weiss and being a part of a larger tract which Martin Harter and his wife Christine conveyed to James McNeal and McNeal in turn conveyed to Jeremiah Hess. According to Orphans Court Records, Book 6 page 516, the estate of Philip Radler, who died intestate in 1858, was settled in court proceedings. A sketch in cluded in those records of parcel No. 1 corresponds to the land described in the 163 acre and 130 perch tract (above) and shows a forks in the road with the Little Wapwallopen Creek flowing through or near the forks of the road and a house adjacent to the road leading from the right forks of the road. This description fits the lands now in the vicinity of the Ralph Hess and LeRoy Hinchcliffe farms and it is reasonable to assume that this was the land referred to and to believe this was the original home of the Radler Family, in this area.

*From the same reference as above, Due to the varied spelling of the name Readler, Radler, Roedler, Rothler, and possibly Roeder, it is difficult to ascertain the exact origin of the family. However, a search of the Church Records of the First Reformed Church of Easton, Pennsylvania indicates that a daughter of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Hess, Eliza beth, was born December 10, 1787 and was baptized there January 1, 1788 and that this Elizabeth Hess married a Philip Radler, who was born May 21, 1786, in 1806 or 1807. Since the Jeremiah Hess family and the Readler family have been closely associated in the Wapwallopen Area history we may reasonably assume that the Readler family came from the vicinity of Easton and settled near the Hess family in Luzerne County in 1806 or 1807. In Book 6. Page 516, Orphans Court Proceedings of Luzerne County, in the Court House Files, settling the estate of Philip Radler we find the following: Philip Radler died intestate September 23, 1858, leav ing a widow Elizabeth (Hess) and the following children : Jacob, born December 30, 1807, died October 9, 1898, who had married Lydia Mowery. a daughter of Peter Mowery. John, born November 25. 1809, died October 14, 1891, who had married Salome (Sarah) Andreas, is listed as a laborer. Mary (Polly), born August 20, 1811, died July 20, 1871. who had married Philip Rockel, a shoemaker, lived in the Pond Hill Area. Margaret (Peggy or Anna), born Nevember 22, 1813, died January 3, 1840, who had married John Peter (Peters), a farmer. Elizabeth, born October 19, 1818, died March 17. 1877 who had married Thomas Peter (Peters), a farmer. Philip. Jr., born April 3, 1816, died March 1, 1879 who had married Rebecca Wenner, was a farmer. Peter, born March 6, 1823 who had married Martha Elizabeth Stukey on September 22, 1846, was a farmer.
