Garda May was born in July 1891 in Bayside, Westmorland, New Brunswick. She was the daughter of George Havelock Hazelton Reade and Hannah Jane Anderson. She taught school at Chapman's Corner where she met Alexander Murray Burns, who was also a teacher. They married at her residence on 24 August 1910. They moved west to Drake, Saskatchewan to teach. May taught at Hiawatha School. They then decided to homestead so they farmed at SE 6-32-20-W2, but it was alkali land. They moved and bought NE 11-32-21-W2. Later they bought three more quarters. They operated a mixed farm with cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. They raised Purebred Hereford cattle and purebred Yorkshire pigs, as well as purebred chickens and turkeys. They raised four sons and three daughters. Alexander was a member of many organizations in the Drake community and province, but he never learned to drive a car so May drove him to his meetings. May wanted her children to have the best education so she moved to Drake for the winter so their children could attend school. Later she moved to Saskatoon for the same reason. In 1950, Alex and May moved to Drake. In 1954, they retired in Chilliwack, British Columbia where she passed away in 1971. May was buried in Drake Community Cemetery.
