Hi William,

I was looking at your James Richard Randolph ancestor and the link to the Smalley family and wondering if there could be any link back to the Fitz Randolphs in New Jersey who were linked to the Smalley family there. Do you know if there is any evidence of a link between your branch and the Fitz Randolphs, whether through conventional genealogy or dna? I do note that I found one autosomal match between my father and one of dna tests listed on James's profile. Or is there pretty convincing evidence of being linked to the other Virginia Randolph families? Have you considered doing a ydna test? Oh, and to add, you also match my father for a 19.3cM segment on chr 21, but that is more likely due to several Davis, Maxson, Bee links we have from your family's West Virginia days

Hi Thomas. We made contact a couple of months ago on Ancestry. At the time, you had mentioned doing some work here on Wikitree and I did make some updates on my tree. I need to spend more time on this site, as I'm still not completely comfortable with the navigation and don't want to step on the work of other people. Regarding our connection, I would love to find a solid connection with either the Fitz-Randolph's of New Jersey or the Randolph's of Virginia. Interestingly enough, there is a good chance I may have connected through my maternal Davis Line, as the Davis's and the Fitz-Randolph's settled in the area of what is now Salem, WV. My connection to James Randolph has come through the records on a number of websites - Ancestry - Spokt Family and Tree DNA. The documents supporting James Randolph I think are primarily land records and a will. I did do the Y - 111 DNA Test through Family Tree Test. I think I posted it here on Wiki-Tree, but again, I'm not sure if I did it correctly. I'd love it if you can let me know if all of the DNA Test I've taken have been correctly submitted. Again, I've completed the Ancestry, 23 & Me and the Family Tree Y - 111 DNA Test.

Since my initial reply, I was asked to update the information on my DNA. But first, I can also update my link to the Fitz-Randolph's. Indeed, I am related to the Fitz-Randolph's through my maternal line (Davis). Mary E. Polly Davis, daughter of William Greenbriar Billy Davis and Granddaughter of my 6th Great Grandfather Thomas William Davis, married Jonathan Fitz-Randolph (1775-1853), son of Samuel Fitz-Randolph 1738-1825.

Regarding my DNA, in Sep 2022, I upgraded my Y-111 test (Nov. 2019 - M-253) to the Big 700 test which resulted narrowing my Haplogroup to to Haplo I-A20024.

Also, my 2nd Cousin Robert Davis, Y DNA test (I P-37) was upgraded in late 2023 to the Big Y 700 which narrowed the Haplo-Group to I-FT112213.

And thanks for joining the Fitz Randolph Y-DNA project! It's great that you have confirmed your connection to the Fitz Randolphs while also providing (together with your cousin) a key Y-DNA reference for descendants of James Randolph 1725-1797 as its own line. I hope at some point your Y-DNA helps establish links farther back and your origins before America!

Hello, Bill and welcome to Wiki Tree! Your ancestor, Abraham Randolph, is my 4th Great Uncle, half brother of my 3rd Great Grandfather, John Henry Randolph, sons of James Richard Randolph, which makes you and I distant cousins. Abraham and James had different mothers. My maternal grandmother was a Randolph from this line. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you.

Again, welcome!

Sandy Davis
