A. Philip Randolph was awarded the Spingarn Medal for outstanding achievement by an African American.

A. Philip Randolph was a civil rights leader and labor organizer. He accepted the Humanist of the Year Award from the American Humanist Association in 1970 and signed Humanist Manifesto II in 1973.

A. Phillip Randolph organized the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first black labor union, in 1925. He and Bayard Rustin originated the idea of a march on Washington in 1941 to protest discrimination in the war industries, end segregation, desegregate the armed forces, and enact an anti-lynching bill. The march was canceled after President Roosevelt signed a Fair Employment Executive Order banning discrimination in the war industries. In 1963 he was head of the March on Washington; Rustin was the organizer. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.

In 1900 and 1910, he lived with his family in Jacksonville, Florida. [1] [2]

In 1914 he married Lucille (Campbell) Green, a widow, who was, like him, a Socialist. The couple married in November 1914 at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church.[citation needed] Asa P. Randolph and Lucille E. Greene obtained a marriage license in Manhattan, New York, on 23 June 1914. [3]

The 1915 New York State Census recorded Asa Randolph, head, and Lucele E. Randolph, wife, both age 26, in New York City. He was a porter and she was a hairdresser. Also in the household was Josephene Campbell, mother (but she was Lucele's mother, not Asa's), age 49. All were born in the United States and were described as Black. [4]

The 1920 U.S. Census recorded A. Philip Randolph, age 31, a magazine editor; his wife Lucelia Randolph, age 36, a hairdresser with her own business; and Lucelia's mother Josephine Campbell, age 68, on West 142nd Street in New York City. A. Philip was born in Florida to parents born in Florida. Lucelia was born in Tennessee to a father born in Ohio and a mother born in Virginia. Josephine was born in Virginia to a father born in Virginia and a mother born in Dakota. All were described as mulatto. [5] In 1924, Asa P Randolph, Lucille Randolph, James W. Randolph (probably A. Philip's brother), and Mary Richardson (Lucille's sister) all were listed as voters at 148 W. 142d Street in the 29th Election District of Manhattan, New York City, but their names are not adjacent on the list. [6]

The 1930 U.S. Census recorded Luceel Randolph, age 43, in New York City, with A. Phillip Randolph, her brother(!), age 40; Mary Richardson, age 50, her widowed sister; and Josephine Campbell, age 75, her widowed mother. Luceel reported no occupation; she and Mary both were born in Tennessee to a father born in Virginia and a mother born in Florida; Luceel was age 18 at her first marriage. A. Phillip worked for the Pullman Co. as a messenger; he and his parents were born in Florida, and he was 27 at his first marriage. Josephine was born in Virginia to parents born in Virginia. All were described as Negro. [7]

The 1940 U.S. Census recorded A. Philip Randolph, age 57, on West 150th St. in Manhattan, New York City, with wife Lucille E. Randolph, age 54, and his sister-in-law Mary E. Richardson, age 70. Philip was born in Florida and worked as an organizer for the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Lucille and Mary were born in Virginia, and reported no occupation. Philip and Lucille had completed 4 years of college and Mary had 3 years of college. All were described as Negro. [8]

Asa registered for the "old man's draft" in 1942 at age 53. He lived at 230 W. 150th Street in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City. He worked for the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters at 217 W. 125th Street in Central Harlem. He listed Mr. Ashley L. Tatten at that address as his contact person.[9]

The 1950 U.S. Census recorded A. Phillip Randolph, age 61, a native of Florida, at 2588 Seventh Avenue in Manhattan, New York City, with his wife Lucilla E. Randolph, age 63, and his widowed sister-in-law Mary E. Richardson, age 75. A. Phillip had been educated through 5 years of college and worked in the labor union industry. [10]

Așa Randolph died on 16 May 1979 in Manhattan, New York.[11] He was cremated and his ashes are kept in an urn at the headquarters of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, Washington, DC.

In 1989, the US Postal Service issued a 25-cent commemorative stamp in his honor.
