Dorothee (Queckenstedt) Kempe died from complications of childbirth.

The first white women to settle in Central Australia were Dorothea Queckenstedt and Wilhelmine Schulze from Germany, the wives of missionaries Kempe and Schwarz. They arrived at Hermannsburg on 10 April 1878, after a six-month trip from South Australia. They were the only European women at the mission for three years. Women's Museum of Australia (2017)[1]


Birth 1853

Dorothee Queckenstedt was born in 1853 at Knesebeck, Wittingen, Celle, Celle, Hannover, Europa. Her father was Johann Von Queckenstedt.[2]

Immigration and Naturalisation 1877

Dorothee departed Hamburg, Germany on 15 Jun 1877 on the ship Peter Goddeffroy, destined for Port Adelaide, South Australia.[3]

On her naturalisation documents, completed on 5 November 1877 at Tanunda, she stated she was 24 years, a spinster and worked as a farm servant. Although she had only arrived in South Australia 3 weeks prior, she was seeking to become a permanent resident of Australia.[4]

Marriage 1878

Dorothee Queckenstedt married Lutheran minister Friedrich Adolf Hermann Kempe (abt.1843-1928) on March 01, 1878 at Dalhousie Springs, South Australia, Australia.[2] Together they had 6 children.

Death 1891

Dorothee passed away at Hermannsburg, South Australia, after the birth of her 6th child, in 1891. She was 38 years old.[5]

Research Notes

The Hermannsburg Mission was established on the banks of the Finke River by Lutheran missionaries from the Hermannsburg Missionary Society and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia in 1877.
