Biography

Private Samuel Pugh served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: 09 Nov 1861
Mustered out: 16 Nov 1865
Side: USA
Regiment(s): 57th Ohio Infantry

Samuel Pugh was born about 1832 in Ohio.

He joined the 57th Ohio Infantry Regiment on 09 Nov 1861 for a period of three years. He was assigned as a Private with Company G.[1]

He was transferred to Company D, 17th Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps on 27 Oct 1863.[1] This was popularly known as the invalid's corps, indicating he was no longer fit for full duty. He remained with the Veteran Reserve Corps throughout the war, mustering out on 16 Nov 1865.[2]

He married Rachel (Faulk) Shoemaker on 02 Mar 1865 in Hancock County, Ohio.[3] Together they had at least the following children:[4][5]

  1. Sophia Alice (Pugh) Flick (14 Jan 1866 - 16 May 1921)

At the time of the 1870 Census, they were living in Union Township, Hancock County, Ohio. He worked there as a farmer. A 13 year old boy, John Henry Showalter, was living in their household at that time.[6] His relationship to the family is unclear.

They were still living in Union Township at the time of the 1880 Census.[7]

His wife, Rachel, passed away on 29 Aug 1884. She was buried at Clymer Cemetery, Mount Cory, Hancock County, Ohio.[8]

He applied for and received an invalid's pension on 19 Dec 1884 based on his military service.[9]

At the time of the 1890 Veteran's Census he was still living in Union Township.[2]

At the time of the 1900 Census, he was living in Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio. He was living in the household of his daughter, Alice (Pugh) Flick. He was no longer working.[10]

He was admitted to the Soldiers' Home in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, on 27 Feb 1901. He suffered from a double inguinal hernia, cardiac hypertrophy, and chronic bronchitis. At that time he was described as being 5'4" tall with a fair complexion, grey eyes, and grey hair. His religion was Protestant. He was able to both read and write. He was discharged at his own request on 29 Oct 1901. Following his discharge he returned to Findlay.[5]

He passed away about 1903. He was buried beside his wife, Rachel, at Clymer Cemetery, Mount Cory, Hancock County, Ohio.[11][12]

Research Notes

Some of his military documentation has his last name spelled Peugh.

His Soldiers' Home record indicates he had a son, Tobias Peugh, living in North Manchester, Indiana. I have seen no other record of this child.
