Biography

Isham Puckett Jr. was likely born in Prince George or Henrico Co, VA, in an area that became Chesterfield Co, in 1749. He might have been born in Bristol Parish like his father. See Logistical Considerations. Isham was born before 1748, if he was 16-years-old when paying taxes in 1764. He may have been born as early as 1741, if his father was 18-years-old at the time.

In 1762, his father, Isham Puckett, received a land patent in Lunenburg Co, VA. Then, in 1764, both Isham Puckett Sr. and Isham Puckett Jr. appear on a tax list in Lunenburg Co, VA.^[1]

By 1778-1781, Isham Puckett, Jr., Thomas Puckett, and Page Puckett were found in Surry Co, NC. All three men are believed to be sons of Isom Puckett Sr. (1724-aft.1775) and his wife, Martha. It appears Isham Puckett Jr. moved into adjacent Henry Co, VA, before 1785. This area later became part of Patrick Co, VA, in 1791.^[2]

Isham Puckett Jr was last documented on the 1809 Tax List. On the 1820 Census, we find the following Pucketts listed next to each other; Patsey Puckett, Thomas Puckett, Isham Puckett age 26-44 (likely Isham III), and James Puckett.

Taxes - In 1764, in Lunenburg Co, VA, both Isham Puckett, Senr. and Isham Puckett, Junr. are listed under St. Jas. Parish.^[1]

Boundary Change - In 1765, Mecklenburg was formed from Lunenburg Co, VA.^[2]

Deed - In 1775, father sells land in Mecklenburg Co, VA.

Warrant - On 31 Dec 1778, in Surry Co, NC, Isham Puckett was mentioned in the following record. It's unclear if this is for Senior or Junior. For more information about Pucketts found in Surry, see Puckett - Surry County, North Carolina Land Entries.

• "#1208. SAMUEL HUMPHRIS enters 100 acres of land in Surry Co. on the FLATT SHOLE CREEK above the main road including ISHAM PUCKETT's improvement for quantity. December 31, 1778. [Warrant granted]"^[3]
• See 1776 Map of Southern VA including Ararat River in NC. Flat Shole Creek is believed to be a tributary of Ararat River, and located in present day Surry Co.

Research Notes

Conflation - It seems father and son are frequently conflated. The rumors of Pucketts being born in Grayson Co, VA, decades before it's formation in 1793, have added to the confusion.

Research leads - The following are deeds for Pucketts in Patrick Co, VA, that might be related. However, use caution as there was an Anthony Puckett (abt.1805-) in the area, but he was the son of Laban Puckett and Elizabeth Overby.
