Research Notes
Although a number of sources, including PRDH and St Thomas parish records, identify the wife of Louis Morin dit Valcourt as Marie Ursule Proulx, daughter of François Proulx and Modeste Poirier, there is reason to believe that she is, instead, the daughter of François Proulx and Josephte Michaud.
There is only one parish record of a daughter Ursule born to François Proulx and Modeste Poirier (25 Aug 1769). There is, however, a record of a Marie Ursule Proulx born 4 Nov 1770 to François Proulx and Marie Josephe Michaud in the same parish. This date closely matches the age of Ursule Proulx, wife of Louis Morin, who was 77 when she died in May, 1848.
The 25 January 1791 parish marriage record for Morin and Proulx omits the name of the bride in the text. A marginal notation names bride and parents (Ursule fille de François Proulx and Modeste Poirier). The relationship is "quatrième degré d'affinité," and witnesses include "François Morin dit Valcour, d'Augustin Proux, François Proux, François Michaux père et oncles des époux." Although there is an interlineated entry for a marriage contract in the index to notarial records of Nicolas Charles Louis Lévesque, pages that would include the contract details are missing. On 23 August of 1791, a second Ursule Proulx, the daughter of François Proulx and Modeste Poirier, is married in the same parish. The relationship is "troisième degré d'affinité," and witnesses include "Clément et Jean Hinsse, François, Basile, et Jean Baptiste Proux, père et oncles des époux." This marriage is confirmed by the notarial records of Nicholas Gaspard Boisseau.
The parish birth records for the children of Louis Morin dit Valcour and Ursule Proulx identify several godparents related to the infants: three maternal uncles, Charles, Jean Baptiste, and Abraham Proux, a maternal aunt, Genevieve Proux, and Marguerite Coquier, wife of Charles Proux. These names match the offspring of François Proulx and Marie Josephte Michaud but do not match children of François Proulx and Marie Modeste Poirier (Marie Modeste m. Charles Jonca; Ursule m. Eustache Hinsse; Jacques m. Marie Josephe Normand; Veronique m. Jean Baptiste Morin; Marie m. Louis Côté; Françoise m. Jean Baptiste Bernadache; Marie Elisabeth m. Jean Baptiste Hinnse; Thomas m. Marguerite Roueau; Joseph m. Rosalie Boulet; François m. Marie Carron).
The only witness signature at the 1799 marriage of Charles Proulx is by his brother-in-law Louis Morin dit Valcour, a signature that matches the signatures on the 1796 and 1797 baptismal records of François and Marie Olive Morin. Finally, another daughter of François Proulx and Marie Josephte Michaud, Marie Josephe Proulx, who married Pierre Proulx, had a son Marcel, born 1804. This would be about the right age for the Marcel Proulx who attended the burial of Ursule Proux in 1848.
