Origin and Meaning of the McAlpin Name

McAlpin is a Scottish name. It was first found in Argyllshire (Gaelic era: Ghaidheal). The western part of Scotland is considered to correspond with that of the ancient kingdom of Dl Riata. This was in the Strathclyde region of Scotland. and now part of Argyll and Bute. History they were seated before the Norman Conquest and before the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in the year 1066 AD.

The name is said to be derived from “the son of the blond one” or “son of Alpin”

Variants in the spelling were very common back in medieval names, due to the fact of lack of education. Also scribes wrote down the names how they sounded rather than following rules. Documents showing the name, McAlpin appears in documents as MacAlpine, MacAlin, MacAilpein (Gaelic).

Country of Origin

The McAlpin name was first found in Argyllshire, a western part of Scotland. This is possibly the ancient Kingdom of Dal Riata, in the Strathclyde region of Scotland. This is currently considered part of the Council Area of Argyll and Bute.

 : King Kenneth MacAlpin was murdered by the Picts near Dundee during the year 834. MacAlpin is considered the first king to rule both Scots and Picts. (Picts were a warrior people of ancient Britain who migrated from the shores of Brittany around the 15th century BC).[1]

After research, and the use of DNA, it was conclusively proven that we are a distinct and unique family hailing from the Kilmartin Glen of Scotland, near King Kenneth McAlpin's fortress at Dunadd.

Alexander McAlpin was awarded American Revolution land bounty in Wilkes, Georgia for his American Revolution Service.
Robert McAlpin (son) (1752 -1804) was awarded American Revolution bounty in Georgia. He served as Justice of Peace in Georgia. He purchased land in Louisiana in 1804, was murdered on the Natchez Trace by robbers on return home.
