The goal of this project is to ...

Right now this project just has one member, me. "I HOPE YOU WILL JOIN AND SHOW ANOTHER GEOGRAPHICAL SPACE IN THE USA FOR the BURNETT surname! (I am Roberta Burnett).

Here are some of the tasks that MIGHT be done & BE USEFUL. I'll be working on them, and could use your help!!

  • In the Burnett lines are many individuals from the 1700s through the present who traveled through life along the Southern part of the USA. My family is there, ending in CA, a westernmost state. Some were not good record keepers, posing stiff genealogical problems. Many died in the Civil War (The War Between the States), under the Southern flags and Southern generals; many died needlessly since medical treatment was rudimentary.
  • Traditional naming practices complicate that BURNETT line. These COMPLEXITIES need straightening out. One source, a book by June Bork seems to be the standby and her work is huge for these families. But some genealogists question them. I haven't quite clarified my own tree including its connections to the pioneering BOWIE family of father, to Jim Bowie and his brother John.
  • All or many Burnett lines lead to Alexander Burnett of Lays, the earliest Burnett, probably, who (I'm guessing) was the first to use Burnett as a family surname. (Guesses must be eliminated, of course, and maybe I'm misinformed.
  • Clarity and accuracy are the goal.

Will you join me? Please post a comment here on this page, in G2G using the project tag, or send me a private message. Thanks!

My Burnetts seem to me to be rough-hewn and difficult people. My grandfather, a 6'8" scrawny cow wrangler, was semi-literate and seems to have passed on some rugged family genes. It was a line of difficult people, not the famous "Ordinary People." My mother seems to have imitated her father and all his three children by Edna Owen loved him (William Ward Burnett). I am a throwback to my Grandmother Edna in this line and her female relatives. They endured.

My Burnett family is from Scotland via Canada and settled in Michigan. I'm currently working to find my great-great grandfather in the Canadian records as that is his birthplace listed in the Census records. We'll see where I get.
