Erik Dean Prince was born in Holland, Michigan, on 6 June 1969. He is the only son of Edgar Prince, as he has three older sisters. He attended Holland Christian High School.
After graduation, Erik attended the United States Naval Academy for three semesters, but left for personal reasons. He then attended Hillsdale College and received a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1992.
After his time in college, Erik served as an officer in the United States Navy, and then went on to become a Navy SEAL. He served in Haiti, the Middle East, and the Balkans during his tenure as an officer, attaining the rank of lieutenant. After his father's death in 1995, Erik retired from the Navy very early, assuming his position in his father's company until 1996 when his mother sold the company.
After moving to Virginia Beach, Erik founded Blackwater Worldwide in 1997. He held the position as CEO until his resignation on 2 March 2009. In late 2010, Erik sold Blackwater to a group of investors. He moved to Abu Dhabi that same year after being hired by its crown prince. He is now as of 20 September 2020 a head of Frontier Resource Group, a private equity firm, and a chairman of Frontier Services Group, Ltd.
During his tenure as CEO of Blackwater, Erik's first wife, Joan Keating, died from cancer in 2003. He has since remarried twice. Erik has seven children.
