Matilda Anna (Prince) Argall was born on 27 Jan 1857 in Lymington, Hampshire, England, daughter of George Edward Prince (~1828 - ~1908) and Matilda (Tuck) Prince (~1840 - 1858).^[1]
Her half-brother was George Prince (1870 - 1940) (son of George and Sarah).

Early life

In the 1861 UK Census, she is listed as Matilda A Prince, a Scholar aged 4, born in Lymington, Hampshire. She is living in Back Lane Row, Lymington with her Great-Aunt, Grandmother and Father. ^[2].
In the 1871 UK Census, she is listed as Matilda Prince, aged 14, born in Lymington, Hants. She is living at 25 Southampton Road, Lymington, Hampshire with her father, step-mother and a step-brother. ^[3].

Migration

Went to Australia between 1871 and 1880. Possibly via America.^[4]

Marriage

Possible first marriage: to Arthur Carter. ^[5]
Their son was Arthur Frederick (Carter) Argall (1881 - 1953). (Arthur Carter's identity of this parentage is not clearly established ) also under the name Annie Carter in Arthur Frederick's Birth record which also says they were married on Sep 7 1880 in "America".^[6]
Matilda married Thomas A Eslick (1863 - 1919) on 27 Oct 1883 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, under the name PRINCE. Marriage recorded in New South Wales records: Registration No. 1627/1883 ESLICK, THOMAS and PRINCE, ANNIE in SYDNEY.^[7]

The family took on the surname of Thomas step-father Frederick Argall (1849-1936).

Gollan-99 04:27, 6 November 2022 (UTC) Annies' first "spouse" is possibly Arthur Carter. He is named as the father of Annie's first child born in Australia on his birth record (transcription attached). It states that they were married on Sep 7 1880 in "America". It also states he is a valet born in England. So possibly NOT the Arthur Carter born near Yass... This may all be an elegant fiction concocted to legitimise this child's birth.
Marriage record in America not yet found or thoroughly searched for.
