George Powell was born in 1855 in Brynmawr, Brecknockshire/Breconshire, Wales to James Powell and Henrietta (Wicks) Powell. His birth was registered in Crickhowell, Brecknockshire in the first quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Wicks.[1]
In 1861 George Powell (age 6) lived at North Side of King Street in Llangattock, Brecknockshire in the household of his grandfather John Wicks (56, Coal Miner), along with his grandmother Kezia Wicks (58), father James Powell (38, Coal Miner), mother Henrietta Powell (36), and two siblings: Mary (9) and Arthur (3).[2]
In 1871 George Powell (age 15, Grocers Assistant) lived in Brynmawr, Llanelly in the household of his employer Thomas Watkins (Grocer).[3]
George Powell married Annie Rees on 26 Jul 1880 in Llanelli, Brecknockshire. George Powell; Widower. Witnesses: David Evans, Mary Evans.[4] The marriage was registered in Crickhowell in the third quarter of the year.[5]
George and Annie had seven children: Annie Winifred (Powell) Evans (1881-1942), George Herbert Arthur Powell (1883-), Walter Rees Powell (1885-1954), Lily Jane Powell (1887-), Sydney Frederick Powell (1888-1891), Dan John Powell (1890-), and Henrietta Powell (1892-1894).
In 1881 George Powell (age 27, Grocer & Baker) lived at Glamorgan St in Llanelly, Breconshire in the household of his widowed mother Henrietta Powell (52, Grocer), along with his wife Annie (24), brother Arthur (14[24], Grocer), and grandfather John Wicks (77).[6]
In 1891 George Powell (age 37, Grocer) lived at King Street in Llanelly with his wife Annie (35) and five children: Winifred A (9, Scholar), Geo H (7, Scholar), Walter R (5, Scholar), Lily Jane (4, Scholar), and Dan Jno (1), as well as servant Mary Jane Merediter (20).[7]
George's wife Annie succumbed to influenza during the epidemic of 1895, as did his brother Arthur.
George married his brother's widow, Mary Harriet (Lloyd) Powell in 1896. Consequently, their children became step-siblings, as well as cousins. The marriage was registered in Bedwellty, Monmouthshire in the first quarter of the year.[8]
Mary had at least two children from her previous marriage: Arthur James Powell (1888-) and Florence Louise Powell (1891-).
George and Mary had at least two children: William Cyril Powell (1897-) and Edith Marjorie Powell (1899-).
In 1901 George Powell (age 47, Shop Keeper Grocer) lived at King Street in Brynmawr with his wife Mary Harriet (36) and eight children (some of whom are step-children): George Herbert (18, Carpenter's Apprentice), Walter Rees (16, Grocer's Apprentice), Lily Jane (14), Arthur James (12), Dan John (12), Florence L (10), William C (4), and Edith Marjorie (1).[9]
In 1911 George Powell (age 56, Grocer & Baker) lived in Brynmawr with his wife Mary Harriet (47) and five children: Lily Jane (24, Milliner), Dan John (21, Confectioner & Baker), Florrie (20, Assistant Grocers), Cyril N (14, School), and Marjorie (12, School).[10]
George passed away on 4 Jul 1930: "POWELL George of 11 Podsmead-road Gloucester died 4 July 1930 Probate Gloucester 29 July to Mary Harriet Powell widow. Effects £2225 14s."[11] His death was registered in Gloucester in the third quarter of the year.[12] An obituary was published in the Gloucester Journal on 12 Jul 1930.[13]
