Hannah was born in 1791 in the village of Gillamoor, the daughter of William and Ann Porter and was baptized in the nearby Market Town of Kirkbymoorside. She married Robert Wood in 1812 and the couple had eight children. Life was hard for Hannah, a poor farmer's wife. Her husband died in 1834. Their final child, Abraham, was born a year earlier. By 1841 widow Hannah had two of her youngest children still living with her, By 1851 she was listed as the head of a pauper family. Her daughter Nanny Conning, 24, and son-in-law Joseph Conning were with her. He was listed as a cabinet maker's apprentice but couldn't have been contributing much income. Her daughter Alice, 21 was a servant working elsewhere. Her grandson William, age 5, son of her daughter Mary, (a live-in servant in Oswaldkirk) was also under Hannah's care. In addition she was boarding one possibly unrelated child, age 10, and caring for a five-month old infant. Not an easy life for a 60-year-old woman. Hannah passed away in October 1862.
