Biography

Almira Poole was born in August 1847. [1] She was the daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Bloom) Poole. [2] [3]

On February 8, 1869 she married John Nickerson Martin of Ithaca. [4] He was the son of William and Frances Martin who lived on the Mecklenburg Road at Kennedy Corners in Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York. On the 1870 census, John and Almira were each listed in the household of their parents, but also listed as a family in Enfield, New York. [5] [6] In 1875, they were in Enfield Center, New York. [7] [8] John died October 14, 1879, leaving Almira with five children: Ida May, William Thomas, John, Frances and Mary.

After her husband’s death, Almira and her children were on West Hill in Ithaca with her blind uncle, John Pool. She was keeping house and her brother Franklin was working the farm. [9]

In 1892, her uncle was still with Almira and her children, but listed in Newfield, Tompkins County, New York. [10] About 1898, Almira and her daughters Ida May and Mary purchased two farms in Danby, where they were in 1900. [11]

Michael Handy of Danby has sold two farms consisting of 161 and 33 acres, situated in Danby to the Misses Elmira [Almira], Ida May and Mary E. Martin. Consideration $1,950. – The Ithaca Daily News, 1898-1899; no specific date.

Almira stated that she had five children and all five were still alive. Nevertheless, in 1905 she had added a daughter, Ruth J. Martin (age 13) to her household, which would have made six children. [12] Ruth was definitely a member of the family and referred to as a niece and sister in obituaries and estate documents. Nevertheless, her relationship to Almira is somewhat of a mystery. In 1910, when Almira was living on West Clinton Street in Ithaca, New York, she again claimed she had five children. [13] Ruth married Leon Schutt in 1919 and, in 1920, Almira and another daughter Ida were in the Schutt household. [14]

Almira Martin died March 11, 1926 in Ithaca, New York. She is buried in Inlet Valley Cemetery, Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York. [15] [16]
