Biography

Salvatore Pomara is born and baptized 11 June 1804 in Corleone, named after his paternal grandfather. He is the son of Paolo Pomara and Brigitta Cammarata. His godparents are Gaspare and Antonina, son and mother, whose last names are not given.^[1]

Salvatore marries Santa di Rao on 27 January 1833. His parents have died by this time.^[2]

By 1834, Salvatore, called "Reina," is part of a predatory armed gang led by Rapanzino. He and four others escape prison in Corleone this year, according to a note dated 1 August 1836 in the police report.^[3]

Three members of the band, one called Baglione and two brothers Palumbo, are guillotined in Palermo in December 1835.^[4] Baglione is later named as Reina's killer.

A bounty is set on 17 March 1836 for the surviving members of the Rapanzino gang. Reina is on the list.^[3]

In the summer of 1836, the rest of Rapanzino's armed band is exterminated, either arrested or killed.

Death

A note in the police record for 15 December 1836 is on the prize awarded in the arrest of the bandit Salvatore Pomara, alias Reina, whose body was revealed to be one found in the Rinelle River (fiume delle Rinelle). Reina was killed by fellow band member Francesco Piazza, alias Baglione,^[3] who was guillotined the previous December with the Palumbo brothers.

Open issue: according to the Corleone parish records, Salvatore dies at the reported age of 32 on 22 July 1837 in Corleone. Santa survives him.^[5]
