Biography

Gaspare Pollara is born 15 April 1888 and baptized the next day in Corleone. He is the son of Nicolo’ Pollara and Rosaria Leone. His godfather is Giovanni Francaviglia, an unmarried man from Prizzi.[1]

A note on his baptismal record says Gaspare marries in New York in the Chiesa Carmine on 15 December 1912 to Leoluchina Marino, daughter of Vincenzo Marino and Bernarda Piranio, who was born 5 July 1894. There is a corresponding note on her baptismal record; Leoluchina is also born in Corleone.

Gaspare's father immigrates in 1905, arriving on 6 June[2] Gaspare follows on the SS Il Piemonte sailing from Palermo on 12 June and arriving in New York on 3 July 1905.[3] Gaspare's mother and siblings follow in April 1906.[4]

In the 1910 federal census of Manhattan, taken 26 April, Nick Pollaro, 48 (b. 1862), heads a household on E. 106th St. in Ward 12. Living with him are his wife of 24 years (m. 1886), Rose, 44 (b. 1866), and children Gaspar, 22 (b. 1888), Sam, 17 (b. 1893), John, 14 (b. 1896), Mary, 10 (b. 1900), Bessie, newborn (b. 1910). Rose has had ten children, five still living. Except for Bessie, born in New York, the family were all born in Italy. Nick and Gaspar came in 1905 and the rest of the family in 1906. Nick is a plasterer, Gaspar does odd jobs, Sam is an operator in a dress shop.[5]

"Gaspari Pollaro", age 24 (b. 1888), born in Italy, son of Nicolo’ Pollaro and Rosaria Leone, marries Leoluchina Marino, age 18 (b. 5 July 1894 in Italy), daughter of Vincenzo Marino and Bernarda Peraino, on 9 December 1912 in Manhattan.[6]

Leoluchina's family, on her mother's side, include the Bagarella family, who are active under Navarra, Liggio, and Riina in the Fratuzzi of Corleone.

Gaspare is a building contractor and associate of Giuseppe Morello. He is with Morello when he is assassinated on 15 August 1930. Gaspare is nearly killed in the attack.[7]
