Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Martha (Pogue) Myers is a part of US Black heritage.

Martha Pogue, age 20, is recorded as marrying in in 1890, when her parents were written as being named George and Martha Pogue. Subsequent census records indicate that she was born in 1873 (not 1870 as indicated by the marriage record). Her marriage record indicates her place of birth as Garrett County, Maryland, and other records indicate birth in Maryland. Her death record gives the name her father as George Pough; her mother's name was not known.

According to her marriage record, Martha was born in Garrett County, Maryland. The 1900 U.S. Census gives her birth date as August 1873.[1] She is identified as the girl named in the 1880 U.S. Census as Vandaley Pogue, living in Altamont, Garrett County, Maryland, in the household of George Pogue. Family members recorded were Geo. Pogue, age 84 and described as "helpless with old age"; his wife Phoebe, 49; daughter Sarah, 14; son George L., 11; son William, 9; daughter Vandaley, 7; and son Marcillus, 4. All were described as Black. George was said to be born in Virginia to parents born in West Virginia. Phoebe was born in Maryland to a mother born in Virginia, and the children were born in West Virginia. Son George was working as a laborer.[2] Variations on the names Vandaley and Marcillus appear among her children, consistent with the identification of this as her birth family.

Martha Pogue married Charles Coleman, a widower, on 3 July 1890, in Mineral County, West Virginia. The marriage entry showed her parents to be George and Martha Pogue, she was aged 20 and born in Garrett County.[3] (At the time Martha was actually only 16 years old.)

Charles and Martha set up home in Piedmont, Mineral, West Virginia, which is on the state border with Maryland, separated from Maryland by the Potomac River. They were living there in a rented house when the 1900 census was taken. By that time, Martha had borne five children, but only three were living.[1]

According to this census Martha could read and write but the census of 1910 mentions she couldn't.

The family was again recorded in Piedmont in 1910, when the federal census was taken, Martha had had nine children, but only four were living.[4]

Martha was widowed in 1918, at the time they were still living in Piedmont.

In 1920 she was living in Pittsburgh at 45 Crawford Street with her daughter Vandela who is listed with a married name of Washington.[5]

It is not known where her children Marcella (age 28), Raymond (age 14), and Isabel (age 10) were living in 1920.

In the 1929 Pittsburgh City Directory, most of the family are listed as living at 45 Crawford Street, Marcella is apparently listed twice.

The family were recorded on the 1930 census in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. [6]

Her parents were both recorded as having been born in West Virginia.

Some time after the 1930 census she married a Mr Myers (or Meyers); no details of the marriage has yet been found. The 1940 U.S. Census recorded her as Martha Meyers, a widow, living in the home of her daughter, Marcella, and son-in-law, Samuel Satterfield, in Pittsburgh.[7] [8]

She died 7 August 1948 at her home at 2185 Elmore Street due to coronary occlusion and was buried in Allegheny Cemetery, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.[9]

Research Notes

It is not confirmed that Martha's mother is Phoebe. She indicated her mother was named Martha on her marriage document.

Records for another George Pogue

If Martha Pogue was born in 1873, her father could not be the George Pogue who arrived from Ireland aged 9 with mother Nancy and siblings James, John and Mary.[16] He appears with his family in 1855 census in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts[17] but dies single in 1868 before Martha was born[18]

Re the 1880 census for George Pogue -- a daughter Vandaley is listed. On Martha's death certificate, the informant is her daughter Vandella. And Vandaley is the same age Martha would have been in 1880.

Nan, that's exactly why I posted the details of the 'unrelated' Pogue family. There were far too many similarities to ignore it. I think the only proof would be by DNA testing if there are any descendants still alive.

I think Nan is spot-on correct here. The location of Garrett County, Maryland, is where the death certificate says that Martha was born (and it is across the state line from Mineral County, WV), and the fact that the household in the 1880 census includes the Vandaley and Marcillus makes it look very much like the Coleman family. I found George and Phebe in the 1870 census, and I am going to start some profiles.
