Biography

Jacob married Etje Klaas, daughter of Klaas Dirks.

Jacob seems to have been younger than his siblings, living with his brother Dirk in the mid 1680's when their sister's 3 children also lived in the household. He later moved to Oudijk.

Jacob worked as a vredemaker (peace keeper, a position on the town council) for several years.

  • On July 1 1691, Jacob was one of 9 old vredemakers who were called together from the middle section of Drechterland to discuss their paying more money for making the dikes in the area stronger and better. Until now they were not paying quite as much since they were inland.
  • On Nov 6 1696, Jacob as vredemaker was brought in with other officials to make decisions on the new schoolmeester and koster of the church. He had come highly recommended by the stadholder and king of England William III himself. However, he was very young and had never taught reading, writing, singing and math before. In fact, he couldn't even sing. Maybe after he was older they could consider him for the position again.

On Oct 17 1706, Jacob and Etje wrote a Testament. It seems they had no children. Jacob didn't sign it - he may have been very ill. Etje and her brother Jan both signed it with a +. Jacob, however, could read and write. He signed his name in other documents.

Jacob was made voogd (guardian) of his brother Dirk's son Pieter. He acted as a voogd for a few other children as well. He also appears in several documents as a "landrijke" (one who owns land) in Oudijk. On Oct 18 1712 he signed a document that indicated Pieter Bos and Grietje Wognum, cheese sellers in Hoorn, owed him and several other people money. In one of the last documents he signed, he was a witness to an attestatie dated May 20 1715 where he was a witness to a farmer who said he wasn't the father of a married woman's child born out of wedlock because he never had "any fleshlike conversation" with her.
