James was born in 1919. He was the son of Martin Pierce and Artie James.
He resided in Anderson County, South Carolina. He worked as a manufacturer of textiles in the area.
James enlisted in the Army Air Corps on April 25, 1941, prior to the start of World War II. During the war he served as a Staff Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-24D (#42-40555), 4th Antisubmarine Squadron, 479th Antisubmarine Group. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
James was declared "Missing In Action" in early Aug 1943 when his B-24 was shot down by an enemy fighter Northwest of Cabo Ortegal, Spain while on an anti-submarine patrol over the Bay of Biscay during the war.
He died at sea on 8 Aug 1943. He was buried at the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial "Tablets of The Missing" located in Coton, South Cambridgeshire District, England.
