  • Family records. He is my paternal great-grandfather.

John Picot was born on 11 Sept 1849 on the Island of Jersey in the Parish of Trinity, the son of Suky Nancy Marrett and Charles Picot. He was the 4th child in a family of 7 children. After a couple of crossings as a young blacksmith apprentice indentured to the Charles Robin shipping company, he decided to stay on in Caraquet as of 1871 never to return to his homeland. He had 10 children with his wife Adeline Maillou(x) whom he wed on November 13, 1871. On the previous day, Nov. 12th John left his Anglican faith to convert to Catholicism. John set himself up as a self-employed blacksmith at first in Blanchard Settlement, New-Brunswick. After several more moves (Birsimis, Quebec and St. Anne's, New-Brunswick), the Picot family established themselves in Bathurst Village where John soon became a valued and respected member of the community. As a musician, John played the trumpet in many concerts for "The Harmony of the town of Bathurst". He was also School Commissionerand Librarian for the Acadian Debating Society. Eventually, the Picot homestead which fronted on St. Peter Avenue comprised of 53 acres of land. John passed away on 20 Feb 1912.
