Elizabeth Jane Stainback Obituary Published in The Commercial Appeal on Monday, December 6, 1920
Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Stainback, aged 91, a resident of Memphis for 70 years, was found dead in her bed yesterday morning, Sunday, December 5, by her daughter, Mrs. Julia M. Pickett. Mrs. Stainback was apparently in the best of health Saturday and her death is attributed to old age.
Mrs. Stainback came to Memphis in 1850 from St. Johns, New Foundland. In 1853 she married the late Francis E. Stainback of this city and had made her home here since that time.
She was the mother of four children, three of whom are dead. Frank Johnson, her eldest son, won distinction during the yellow fever epidemic here in 1873 and died a victim of that dread disease. She is survived by the youngest of her children, Mrs. A.B. Pickett, 1892 Madison Avenue.
Mrs. Stainback was well known in Memphis because of her extensive church and charitable activities. She was a member of The First Methodist Church.
Funeral services over the body were held yedterday afternoon at the residence, Dr. Bell officiating. It had been her desire to die on a Sunday and be buried the same day.
Interment was private in Elmwood Cemetery.
