Ely Lennon Petty, FTDNA kit #915122, and his uncle, Robert Lee Petty, FTDNA kit #B389157, share the terminal haplogroup I-FT26227, thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their MRCA Sid Ervin Petty.

James Winter Petty, FTDNA kit #435051, and his seventh cousin, Robert Lee Petty, FTDNA kit #B389157, share the terminal haplogroup I-BY34474, thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their MRCA Thomas Petty. (The relation of James Winter Petty, a professional genealogist, to Thomas Petty was demonstrated through extensive and thorough conventional genealogical research.) (Note that several intermediate ancestors have been confirmed by Y-chromosome DNA testing of additional Petty cousins, through subclades of the I-BY34474 haplogroup.)

The Petty Surname Y-DNA Project at FTDNA is preparing a scholarly article comparing the known or strongly suspected physical family trees of its members who are descended from Thomas Petty (Petty-8) with their Big Y-determined haplotrees. We are looking for known or suspected direct male descendants of Thomas Petty who would be willing to take the Big Y-700 test and join the Petty Surname Project, and become part of this ground-breaking study. We are particularly interested in men who have well-documented conventional genealogical evidence to support of their connection to Thomas Petty. Partial to full reimbursement of the cost of the Big Y test is possible. Please reply to this comment if interested in joining this study, or if you'd like additional information. (No personal information of living individuals will be published in this article.)

I'm the current (since late 2021) administrator of the FTDNA Petty Surname Y-DNA Project. I, along with over tree dozen other members of this Project, have taken the FTDNA Big Y-700 test. Nearly two dozen of us share the I-BY34474 haplogroup. Based on the extensively and thoroughly documented family history of one of our participants, James Winter Petty (Petty-3070), a professional genealogist whose research identified Hubert Petty (Petty-7) as his "immigrant" ancestor, and whose haplotree includes I-BY34474, all of the participants who share that haplogroup are confirmed to share Hubert Petty as their most distant known common ancestor.

Hubert Petty had just one son, Thomas Petty (Petty-8), but Thomas and his wife, Catherine (Garton) Petty, had at least six sons. The subclades of BY34474 that have thus far been revealed in the men who share that haplogroup, currently show three primary subclades (BY120617, FTA73188, and FT404340), and two additional (secondary) subclades of both BY120617 (FT122807 and FT14616) and FT404340 (Z39481 and FT399203). In addition, two of the secondary subclades each have an additional (tertiary) subclade as well (FT122807 with FT348032 and FT14616 with FT27227). Combining all of these primary, secondary, and tertiary subclades, we're very proud to now have nine distinct genetic sub-branches of the I-BY34474 haplotree represented in our Project.

The three primary subclades appear to represent the descendants of three of Thomas and Catherine's sons. The WikiTree descendant tree for Thomas and Catherine shows 22 grandsons from four of their sons (with two of the sons having no listed children), and through the subsequent 8 - 9 generations leading to the present time, there are likely many hundreds, if not thousands, of living male descendants of Thomas and Catherine Petty. With Y-chromosome mutations occurring on average every 2 - 3 generations, our nine currently identified terminal haplogroups are but a drop in the bucket of the likely hundreds that are yet to be identified among their descendants.

Any known or suspected direct male descendants of Thomas and Catherine Petty are cordially invited - and strongly encouraged - to take FTDNA's Big Y test and join the Petty Surname Project.

Hi Robert!

Thanks for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Collaboration with Pre-1700 Project members is essential for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because those ancestors are usually shared by many descendants.

It looks like the US Southern Colonies Project would be a good fit based on your branch of WikiTree. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Karen ~ WikiTree Messenger

Thanks for checking in with me Karen. I'm doing fine so far, getting used to the site. I'm pretty busy on Ancestry.com and FamilyTreeDNA, so not spending a lot of time here, but gradually getting parts of my tree filled in. My main reason for joining WikiTree though is it's resources for contacting relatives I discover here. I'm involved in a Y-DNA Petty-surname study (which includes the direct male descendants of Thomas Petty (Petty-8). I'm always on the lookout for Petty cousins who appear to be part of the Thomas Petty clan, who I can then tell about our project, and see if they might be interested in joining. (We're looking for Petty-surname descendants of, ideally, representatives of every branch of Thomas Petty's tree - of which I'm a ninth generation descendant.) Our ultimate goal is to be able to identify each of our unverifiable (through traditional means) ancestors - the sons, grandsons and great-grandsons of Thomas Petty who left very meager, if any, paper trails for us to follow - through genetic means. Our hope is that by defining each of our individual haplotrees in enough detail, we'll be able to extrapolate back through the members of those 18th century generations to determine which individuals belong to each of us descendants. (It's going to be a long term project!)

Sorry, this is probably way more information that you wanted from me! Thanks again for contacting me. -Bob

Thanks for signing the Honor Code, Robert. I hope you discover as much about your family as I have about mine over the last several years.

One of our mentors created a tutorial for the GEDCOMpare process that I found very helpful. I hope that you will too.

If you have any questions about how WikiTree works, let us know by using the "reply" link under our comments or by clicking our names to visit our profiles. From there you can leave a comment or send a private message.
