Biography

John was born about 1830 to Benjamin Pettit and Deborah Johnson in Ohio.^[1] He married Sallie Ann Dutton on 11 February 1856 in Cuyahoga, Ohio.^[2]

The first mention of John J. Pettit in the Pittsburgh area occurs in 1868 where he was working as a commission merchant at 138 Washington Street. He lived at 186 Washington Avenue.^[3][4] He and Sallie subsequently moved to Allegheny City, Pennsylvania where they built an Italianate style home at 77 Fayette Street between 1876 and 1877.^[5] To see a photo of this home click here: [1]
