Joseph was born in 1802 in Mozambique and was of African ancestry.
The caption on the grey image to the right reads:

Joseph was tried in Port Louis (Mauritius) Assizes on 23 June 1842 and a
Sentence of 7 yrs was handed down to him. His transportation was for the crime of Manslaughter. It was stated that his offence was:
"Setting fire to a house – a man was burned to death in it."
Joseph embarked the Ship - Agenoria. in Mauritius arriving in Van Diemen's Land on 6 January 1843. [1]
