John Thompson 'Tommy' Pethybridge was born on 26th January 1907 in Collingwood, Victoria, Australia. He was the eldest son of Marion (Vickers) Pethybridge and John Thompson Pethybridge. [1] The family was living in Tamworth, New South Wales, in 1909, Moree in 1912 and Glebe, in inner Sydney, in 1914.
On 8th November 1935, John was on a flight with Charles Kingsford Smith, attempting to break the England to Australia speed record, when they disappeared over the Andaman Sea. [2] John was 28 years of age.
