Wikidata: Item Q505028, en:Wikipedia help.gif - World Cup-winning footballer (England)

Martin was born in 1943 in Plaistow, Essex (a suburb of London) during the Blitz. He was the son of lighterman William Peters and Mary M Brown.[1] He and his mother were evacuated to Shropshire shortly after his birth.

Around 1950 his family moved to Dagenham where he attended Fanshawe School where he excelled at football, initially playing as a central defender. In the summer of 1959 he was signed as an apprentice for West Ham United. He played over 300 games for them (in midfield) over the following decade before successive 5-year stints with Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City, and a brief period with Sheffield United before taking over as their manager, also for a brief period.

While at West Ham he, along with teammates Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst broke into the England national team, and all three were selected for the 1966 World Cup squad. Martin was omitted from the opening game against Uruguay but was brought in to freshen up the team in the second group game, and kept his place for the rest of the tournament, including the World Cup Final against Germany in which he scored England's second goal (club teammate Hurst scored the other three).

Martin also played all four games in England's less successful 1970 World Cup tournament in Mexico. With West Ham he also won a European Cup-Winners Cup, and with Tottenham a UEFA Cup and two Football League Cups. In 1978 he was awarded an MBE.

After his retirement from football he worked as an insurance agent until he was made redundant in 2001.

He married Kathleen D W Ward in 1964[2] (after meeting her at a bowling alley in Dagenham) and they had two children, LeeAnn and Grant.

He passed away in 2019. He was cremated and his ashes interred in a foundation stone at West Ham's new ground, the London Stadium.

Research Notes

All 9 deceased members of the 1966 World Cup winning team are now profiled on Wikitree, along with Bobby Charlton (living) and Geoff Hurst's father. All are now connected to the Big Tree, but mostly by a single thread. Any additional work on these families would be greatly appreciated.
