18 April 1816 Henry G. Peters, director of Morton Park State Bank, was reported missing by his family.
May 1916 Henry's body, with a suicide note in his pocket, was found in a drainage canal in Lamont, Illinois. A coroner's inquest ruled his death a suicide.
But no! Coroner and state's attourney find evidence of murder. Suicide note was not written in Henry's handwriting. Henry died of a bullet to his head not drowning. At the time of his death Henry was erecting three large apartment buildings in Berwyn, Illinois. He left no will. He had separated from his wife Mrs. Caroline Peters for a decade and she divorced him 5 years ago on the charge of cruelty, receiving $42000 in alimony. Three of his children sided with their mother and accompanied her to Seattle, Washington. They were Miss Clara Peters, Mrs. Emma Hodous, and Edward Peters, who is now in Alaska. The children remaining behind are George C. Peters of Berwyn, Mrs. Tillie Noble, wife of William W. Noble of 6937 Harper Ave., Mrs. Ida Groess, wife of Fred Groess of Cicero, a butcher, Mrs. Amelia Groess, wife of Fred C. Groess, a salesman employed by Lincoln Sash and Door Company. His propery will be split between his seven children. Real estate holdings valued at $150,000 and personalty at $50,000.
Henry Peters passed away 30 April 1816 in Lemont, Cook, Illinois. [5]
