My birth parents were Robert William Perrine and Margie Evaughn Tabler. They married in her hometown of Kouts, Indiana in 1942. Two years later I was born in Valparaiso, Indiana. We lived in Kouts at one time near my maternal grandparents. I remember living with my paternal grandparents on their farm in Wheeler, Indiana when I was a toddler. Eventually my parents bought a small house in Valparaiso. That house is where I grew up and lived until my marriage. When I was five years old, my parents divorced. Shortly after that Robert remarried. That marriage produced a son who is my half brother. My mother also remarried to David Kinne. They had no birth children, but adopted her nephew when he was a few weeks old. They continued to live in the house that Robert Perrine bought until the early 1990's.
When I got engaged, I began wondering exactly when David Kinne had adopted me. I was about to change my last name again and was curious about when it was changed previously. Much to my surprise, I learned that when I entered third grade I was illegally enrolled as Sharon Kinne. From then on, all of my official records, including my social security card, used the name Kinne. All of my records were fraudulent. I felt my only option was to have my stepfather adopt me. Shortly before my wedding, my stepfather and I stood before a judge and made the name Kinne official.
In 1993 my husband and I moved back to Indiana. I began doing genealogy research. The illegal name change gave me a strong desire to discover my roots. I was astounded to find that my ancestors on both sides have been in America for a very long time. My roots go back to the earliest days of American settlement.
