Biography

Judith Madeline (Perrey) Setford was born on March 10, 1927 at St George's Hospital in Kew, Victoria, Australia. Her parents were Harry Perry and Eva Clara (Girt) Perrey (1893 - 1971). However her biological father was Jesse Hedley Howard (1870 - 1929) with whom her mother had a long term love affair. Judith's mother told her the truth when she was fifteen and she thought it was so romantic to be a 'love-child'.[1]

Her siblings were:

  1. Evelyn Jenny Elizabeth (Perrey) Sayers (1913 - 1998)
  2. Grace Muriel Agnes (Perrey) Setford (1915 - 2001)
  3. Albert Harry 'Frank' Perrey (1916 - 1939)
  4. Mary Perrey (1925 - 1925)

Alfred Taylor (abt.1899-1960) was a boarder with the Perrey family in Hawthorn and a friend to them. Judith called him "Uncle Fred".

Judith married Anthony 'Tony' Setford (1922 - 1980) on April 29, 1950 at Christ Church in Hawthorn, Victoria. Tony's brother Ron had married Judith's sister Grace in 1936 so the families were always very close.

Judith's brother Frank had died from a hit and run accident in 1939. The proceeds from his life insurance policy enabled her mother to send her to the prestigious National Gallery Art School in Melbourne from 1943-1947.

She won many prizes and was runner up in the 1947 National Gallery scholarship amongst some controversy as it appears she did not win because she was female. She was a finalist in the Archibald prize in 1948.[2]

Judith died at the Eva Tilley Memorial Aged Care Centre in Kew on May 4, 2016, aged 89.[3]
