Stanley Mervyn Suttor Percival was born on 20th November 1911 in Lithgow, New South Wales, Australia. Merv, as he was known, was the son of Sydney Percival and Ruth Bolger. [1]
On 28th June 1940 Stanley was commissioned into the Second Australian Imperial Force and allocated to the 2/1st Australian Infantry Battalion, a unit of the 16th Brigade and its parent 6th Division. He joined the battalion in the Middle East and served in its successful North African campaign and disastrous Greece-Crete campaign. He would later serve on the Kokoda Track, and in the Aitape-Wewak campaign on the north coast of New Guinea as a Captain and commander of B Company, and was demobilised following the war, on 11th October 1945. [2] Following the war he was awarded the campaign and service medals: 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945.
Whilst stationed in Australia in 1943, Stanley married Lyllian Orton in Hamilton, Newcastle, New South Wales. [3]
