Biography

Giuseppa Pennino, daughter of Paolo Pennino and Giuseppa Cessana, is born on 18 March 1882 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Antonino Labruzzo and Mattea Rizzotto, a married couple.[1]

Giuseppa emigrates to the United States with her parents and siblings. They live in Louisiana.

Josephine, as she's called in the US, marries Gioachino "Jack" Cardarella, who is also from Corleone on July 23, 1899. [2]

They have six known children: John Clement (1903), Paul (c. 1907), Salvatore/Sam (c. 1909), Joseph Aloysius (1910), Josephine Marie (c. 1922), and Jennie (c. 1924).

John Clement is born in Chemel, Louisiana, on 21 November 1903, according to his WWII draft registration. (Not a known place.)

Joseph is born 10 September 1910 in White Castle, Louisiana, according to the records of his death.

On 14 December 1912, Giuseppa's brothers, Joe and George, flee following the murder of a neighbor, Giuseppe Mondello, after a shooting at the Mondello home leaves one dead and four seriously injured. The shooters are first identified as Joe and George Pennino, but ultimately Josephine's husband, Gioachino "Jack" Cardarella and her sister, Crocifissa's husband, Calogero "Charles" Soldano, and their father Paul Pennino are charged with the crimes. Joe Mondello Sr. is killed, his son, Joe Jr. is critically injured, his wife, Anna Palazzo, and another son, Sam, are both shot in the jaw.

The accused recently moved to Powhatan from White Castle and are allegedly poor farmers afflicted by jealousy.[3]

Paul Pennino, Jack Cardarella, and Charles Soldano are arrested and break free from jail on 16 December. Paul is suffering from senility. The sentences are given with mercy because of the condition of Paul Pennino, the father, and the absence of the brothers believed to be at the center of the violence, although Charles and Jack are charged as being at the Mondello’s home and firing at them.[4][3]

Paul, Jack, and Charles take a train to Bunkie, Louisiana, and are caught the next day on their way into the Atchafalaya Swamp, where they intend to hide.

Paul, Jack, and Charles are imprisoned in the state penitentiary in Angola, Louisiana that month.[5]

While still in prison, Charles and Jack are listed in the New Orleans city directory at the Pennino's home address of 619-621 St. Phillip Street, and give this as their permanent address when they register for the draft.

Jack Cardarella registers for the draft for WWI from prison on 12 September 1918. He gives his permanent address as 619 St. Phillip St., New Orleans, LA. He is 43, born 21 April 1875. He is a prisoner in the state penitentiary. His nearest relative is Josephine Cardarella at his NOLA address. Jack is short and of medium build with brown eyes and black hair.[6]
